The Legacy of Christopher Premdas

Christopher Premdas played a defining role in shaping NASA's long-term commitment to Dalit and Adivasi communities and other vulnerable rural populations. His vision was rooted in dignity, equality, social and economic empowerment, and the leadership potential of communities that had historically faced exclusion.
A Vision for Sustainable Change
NASA was established in 1980 and received renewed direction in 1985 through the vision and persistent efforts of Christopher Premdas.
The early work focused on the economic empowerment of Dalit communities in 10 villages. From 1991, integrated rural-development activities expanded into additional villages. Over time, NASA's work also reached Adivasi communities and other vulnerable rural populations.
Christopher Premdas believed that sustainable change required more than short-term assistance. Communities needed opportunities to develop awareness, confidence, leadership, access to resources, and the ability to sustain their own institutions.

A Legacy of Community Ownership
The community-led model shaped during Christopher Premdas's leadership continues to influence NASA's work today. The emergence of beneficiary-led organizations, community-managed livelihood cooperatives, and local leadership structures reflects the long-term value of this approach.
The strongest measure of empowerment is when communities develop the capacity to sustain their own institutions.
Christopher Premdas Scholarship Program
The Christopher Premdas Scholarship Program helps students from low-income Dalit and Adivasi communities pursue educational opportunities and work toward more secure futures. The program supports students who may otherwise face financial barriers when beginning or continuing higher education.
